Biography

Duncan Macgregor is an experienced and adventurous sailor and his voyages have inspired much of his stunning work. Ranging from evocative coastal landscapes to exhilarating representations of sailing through the wind, his compelling images confirm his position as the UK’s most exciting and innovative contemporary marine artist. His distinctive white sails, majestic skies and sparkling reflections combine to form spellbinding narratives of life on the coast and at sea. Taking his inspiration from the surrounding landscape and of course the sea, Duncan is particularly fascinated by the effects of natural light on colour. His distinctive palette conveys the cool yet vibrant shades of sea and sky as they appear to his artist’s eye. Verging on the abstract, his work is characterised by the dense application of richly textured acrylics, which create a sense of spontaneity and unstoppable energy. Born in 1961, Duncan grew up in the Midlands. Despite living so far inland he managed to develop a passion for the sea, and spent a highly significant eighteen months sailing across the Atlantic and then around the coast of Britain. He now lives with his family in a remote area of Norfolk. Duncan has consistently given us collections featuring exhilarating contemporary interpretations of ocean and shoreline, as well as more recently some uplifting tributes to his Norfolk home. But he has also used his studio as a place in which to experiment and has become acknowledged as a pioneer in the art world. First producing his dazzling images on glass he is now painting stunning work on aluminium. The application of paint onto this new surface gives a very different feel to the overall image. Duncan’s sweeping, painterly style is highlighted by the metallic sheen, bringing every detail into sharp relief, while each colour appears as a subtly modified version of itself. Once the paint has been laid down on the surface the familiar blues seem to react with the silvers and greys beneath to bring a new reality to the colours of the sea. Duncan has enjoyed considerable success across the UK, displaying both his Original Paintings and collectable Limited Editions in both galleries and private collections. I spend as much time as I can experiencing the power of the sea at close quarters. I am an experienced sailor and it is the ocean which inspires and moves me to capture the energy and joy of what I see and recreate it on canvas.
